If you are travelling from Narita Airport, take the Narita Express train to Tokyo Station.
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station (90 minutes).
Please note the station you might go is Nagano not Joetsu-Myoko.
Then the local Kita-Shinano Line to Myoko-Kogen Station (40 minutes).
From Myoko-Kogen Station, Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute journey by bus or taxi.
If you are traveling by train to Myoko from Tokyo, please know that you are not able to purchase all tickets needed for this journey in one go.
Once in Tokyo you are able to buy the ticket for the Skinkensen that leads to Nagano (NOT Joetsu-Myoko station), however you must purchase the next ticket to Myoko at Nagano station.
However, this is difficult as you must first exit the main station, buy a new ticket for Myoko from a ticket booth or ticket machine (there is an English setting on the ticket machines) and then re-enter the station with that ticket and make your way down to the Myoko train line.
This may take more time with a family or large group and may end in missing the train as it leaves shortly after arriving in Nagano from the Shinkensen.
An easier way to do this is to use the Shinkensen ticket and put it into the connecting gate that leads to the Myoko train platform and pay for the ticket once you have arrived at the Myoko Station.
The conductor there has been informed this is an easier task and is expecting guests to do this in advance.
The ticket from Nagano to Myoko is 830 yen and this is the price on the machine if you decide to use this option instead.
Drive north through Nagano on the Nagano/Joshinetsu Expressway up into Niigata and get off at Myoko Kogen IC. From there Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute drive.
