If you are travelling from Narita Airport, take the Narita Express train to Tokyo Station.
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station (90 minutes).
Please note the station you might go is Nagano not Joetsu-Myoko.
Then the local Kita-Shinano Line to Myoko-Kogen Station (40 minutes).
From Myoko-Kogen Station, Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute journey by bus or taxi.
If you are traveling by train to Myoko from Tokyo, please know that you are not able to purchase all tickets needed for this journey in one go.
Once in Tokyo you are able to buy the ticket for the Skinkensen that leads to Nagano (NOT Joetsu-Myoko station), however you must purchase the next ticket to Myoko at Nagano station.
You can buy it by ticket machine which is next to the connecting gate that leads to the Myoko train platform.
The ticket from Nagano to Myoko is 830 yen.
Drive north through Nagano on the Nagano/Joshinetsu Expressway up into Niigata and get off at Myoko Kogen IC. From there Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute drive.
